What this data is and isn’t
Sources. Financial and leadership fields come from public filings and press, compiled October 2026. Beds, resident FTEs, payer days and contract labor come from CMS Hospital Cost Reports, FY2024–25. Cancer designation follows the National Cancer Institute list of designated cancer centers. Rankings follow U.S. News Best Hospitals 2026–27 as reported by hospitals and trade press; children’s hospitals appear on the separate Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, not the adult Honor Roll.
Payer-day shares are inpatient days by primary payer from the cost report. The Medicaid share counts fee-for-service Medicaid days only, so it understates total Medicaid where managed care is large. Medicare Advantage days may also fall under “other.” These shares are not revenue payer mix.
Coverage. 221 academic medical centers in 45 states and DC. Operating margin is reported for 119, days cash for 51, CMS payer days for 220, beds for 219. C-suite turnover reflects changes found in public reporting over roughly 24 months (October 2024 to October 2026) at the hospital or its parent health system, includes announced retirements and successions, and undercounts; “not found” does not mean no change.
Institutions and people. Each academic medical center is listed by its flagship hospital and health system, using public sources only. Executive names are not published here; a C-suite change is shown only as yes or not found.
